Lanzarote, the 4th largest (800sqkm) of the Canary Islands,  is situated 120km from the African coast and about 1,200km (about 750 miles) from the Iberian Peninsula.

The island is a very popular holiday destination because of its mild climate with average temperatures between 20 and 25°C (68 - 77 °F) throughout the year.

The main income for Lanzarotenos is tourism, but they are trying not to make the same mistakes that were made elsewhere. They focus on preserving the landscape and integrating traditional architecture into the landscape. Advertising boards are banned from the roadside and you won't see a single shop that is advertising for itself with a big neon sign.

New MexicoI visited New Mexico last year for the first time to attend a conference in Albuquerque. When I started doing some research on what there was to see and do in the area, I quickly arranged to stay on. Albuquerque is a friendly, relaxed city with an outstanding climate, exceptional natural beauty, and a variety of interesting attractions.

You can enjoy just about whatever type of activity you like in Albuquerque, provided you aren't visiting during the height of summer when the heat may deter you somewhat. You can golf, take a balloon ride, go hiking, or learn about Native American culture. Shop for beautiful jewelry or Indian art, taste outstanding Mexican cuisine, or go on a sightseeing adventure on board the incredible Sandia Peak Tramway. Although I was traveling alone, there were tons of attractions that looked ideal for families, from Old Town to the Zoo and Aquarium.

DetroitMention you're planning a vacation to Detroit, Michigan, and some may look at you as if you've got two heads. Others will smile and nod enthusiastically, then recommend their favorite Greektown bakery, suggest a visit to a museum, or offer a tip for hitting it big at one (or all) of Detroit's three new casinos.
