How do you choose your airline?
In my case, I choose in terms of the airline's seniority in the business with proven track of safety and dependability over all those years. Sometimes, the fare also matters but what happens when there is a competition, most businesses give sort of promotions so that they can get back their passengers/clients and this is what I am availing of when I book for the tickets.
What about you, what are your basis in choosing an airline?

I am usually looking for a good Price / Value tradeoff. Let me give you an example:
Airline1 is the better airline, Airline 2 is a little shabbier
Airline1 : $520, Airline2: $500
I choose Airline 1
Airline1: $700, Airline2: $500
I choose Airline 2
Meaning paying a few dollars more for a better airline is not an issue, paying hundreds of dollars more is an issue.

I'd agree with Andre on this issue. Generally price is the biggest issue, but when it's just a matter of a few dollars I'll go for the better airline. My line is generally drawn at around $100.
That's good point, Andre!
It pays to be able to learn about the latest news in the airline industry, too for the special promo packages and rates for trips and travel. Sometimes you got to book one month before just to get a bargain of the price but it's worth it.
Depends. If I know I have to go at a certain time, I prefer booking ahead. If I am flexible I try your approach. But lets say if I want to be somewhere for Christmas, I'd rather book the flight as soon as I can.
How I choose:
1. Search flight booking site (eg STA travel), and sort by cheapest fare
2. Look through the list until I find a name I trust - and book!
As long as they are well known, and are safe, I'm there. I'm 6'4" though, so I usually aim for an aisle seat if I can get one :)
ITAsoftware lets you do a monthlong search. This is great for finding out the lowest priced dates. They license their technology to Orbitz, so usually their results match Orbitz very well (but there you can't find the cheap dates as easily).
I always look for direct non-stop flights, and I prefer Star Alliance because I collect miles
