Thailand Travel Warning

Thailand Travel Warning

Due to the current politcal unrest, I would stay away from Thailand until the situation has settled down. This is very unfortunate, since Thailand is such a popular travel destination.

Background: The military of Thailand has taken control through a coup. Fortunately there was no bloodshed and it seems things may actually be settling down soon.

Citing a popular news source: "Thai Army commander General Sondhi Boonyaratklin said the army had seized power to unify the country, accusing Mr Thaksin of causing corruption, nepotism and an "unprecedented rift in society". He added that the intention was to return power to the Thai people "as soon as possible"."

All of this sounds like the effects may be just short term. In any case, I would keep an eye on the development if I were planning to travel to Thailand.

Thailand will be losing a

Thailand will be losing a lot of money tourisim because of this, there is also some riots in Hungary The protesters are angry at the revelation that the current prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsany admits that his party lied to gain office.

someone from thailand said

someone from thailand said they came to to bankok with only 10 tanks, all quiet and save in all other cities. you could probably take out the tanks with 20 men (or 3 with the help of rambo...) and get your own sunny country with with nice beaches this way :)

Thanks

I wouldn't have known that the Thailand situation is this serious if I weren't posting in this forum.

My friend is now in Thailand and he is not mentioning any problem that may arise out of his stay there and at some point , I was also thinking of going there with the possibility of landing a job and staying there for at least a year. Now that I know this, I rather stay with my online job and with my family.

Thanks, Andre!

My company issued a travel

My company issued a travel warning too. They were mentioning a 48hr period until things settle down. I guess overall it sounds worse than it is, but it is always recommended to keep an eye on such things. You don't want to be caught in the middle of an escalating situation.

Be informed

Yes, that is right. We must be always informed of the latest developments. Thailand is just near our country, it is also a part of Asia. I guess we should all be concerned with what's happening in our neighborhood.

looks like the military

looks like the military putch and bombs last year is only a beginning of a conflict within the thai ruling class over the devision of power before the king dies (he is in his 80-ties and ill).

there will be more political tourmoil, including violence on the streets - thai elites have in deep disregard the basic principles of democracy and will use any means to control the society

I've been in Thailand for

I've been in Thailand for about four months.  The real risks are the bad drivers.  I'm in the northern part of the country, far away from the political unrest of the south.
