Advertisements
In a recent thread some questions came up regarding advertisement. I am creating this new thread to put the discussion where it belongs, so it doesn't take over Larry's thread.
Every new feature requires a little bit of tweaking and I totally agree that some ads might seem out of place (e.g. during signup). So I really do enjoy the feedback from you guys. We will always try to make this a most enjoyable place for everyone.
A question came up about revenue sharing. Revenue sharing means you can sign up with google, get an adsense account and get part of the revenue from this website. I have discussed this a bit with Toptraveller, but we are not completely sure how to implement this. One idea is to enable revenue sharing for Travel Articles. Overall I am not against it but I am still undecided on numbers.
Lets say we implement 50%, which seems to be a good number. What happens if this site needs to be moved to a dedicated server and my costs explode through the roof. Will I be allowed to change this number for some months, until the traffic has grown enough to pay for the servers? I can imagine there would be a huge outcry among the userbase if a promise of 50% was made. Since I am completely new to adsense, I need to see some numbers first before I can make a decision. At some point the site will be able to support itself. Any leftovers can be used for promotion and programming as well as given back to our users. At some point TT and I won't be able to handle the programming and administration alone ....
I am perfectly o.k. to enable revenue sharing for all articles. I would go for 50% if you are o.k. with me adapting this number at some later point in time. Basically this also means I can increase it if all costs are covered (more to you).
Lets hear some thoughts!
Andre

It would be better if you do Revenue sharing for both the people who write articles and for those who post and participate, maybe you will give those who submit a article a higher % though.
Hi
I think it should only be on the articles, but either way, you'll have to devise
some type of accounting method to figure it out, otherwise it'll be an accounting nightmare.
And then how would you pay people their share? Through PayPal?
Larry
Thats actually the easy part. If your ad is shown, the revenue is generated through your adsense code on your google adsense account. This means no accounting and no payment issues. Everything is handled as if you own that part of this site with your ad code on it.
Possibly, but as TT said in the other thread, there may be a whole lot of junk threads being generated while noone really replies to someone elses thread.
We need to figure out how to prevent this.
I still haven't heard what you guys think towards the adjustments. Lets say I have very high server cost, would you mind if I lower the percentages until my cost is recovered? After all, being able to drive more visitors will also increase the chances of your stuff being seen and advertised over time.

hi TT,
I call you TT because Andre calls you the same (although it reminds me of a certain AUDI...)
thnx for removing the ads from my profile

That's fine, but then how will you split it out 50%? If we use my adsense code, then I will get credit for the 100%, which is fine with me, but seems to go against the revenue sharing concept.
Larry
No. The script I am using rotates the adsense code based on the percentages.
That means 50% of the time someone opens the page yours will be shown.
The code is generated dynamically. So you will get 100% of the revenue of 50% of the pageviews, which comes out to be 50% of the overall revenue.
That means if someone clicks while your code is shown we get nothing and vice versa. Over time it will be about 50%.
Or in other terms, you code is shown with 50% probability.

Not just yours and not all of them (the left sidebar still shows them).
Oh,
I didn't even think of using a script...pretty cool.
Then that solves the accounting problem.
And to answer your other question, I wouldn't have a problem if you revised the program
at a later point.

Allright folks. Its done
.

, and please play by the rules. Unfortunately with this also comes greater responsibility. In order not to compromise the integrity of our google account and the reputation of this site, we will deal with violations swiftly.
Otherwise, go ahead and plug your adsense id's.
Callis: We will discuss the revenue sharing option for the forum. Lets see how this plays out!
