Gran Porto Real Hotel - Playa del Carmen
This hotel was a real disappointment.

After arriving at this hotel, I was told that my Suite was not available, although I had clearly made the proper reservations. Instead I was upgraded to the Royal Porto Real Hotel which was a whole class on its own.
However the upgrade was only valid for 3 days, until my room would become available. Arriving at the Royal Porto Real, I was told that they too would only have a room for a day. At this point I looked at the lady at the front desk and statet that I know she can do better and that I am unwilling to move after just one day. I was speaking at a conference that day anyways. Eventually we got another upgrade to a Spa Suite (see link above).
After spending 3 wonderful days at the Royal Porto Real, I went back to the Gran Porto Real, just to be told, that my room still wasn't available. The only choice I was given was either a downgrade or moving back to the other hotel for one more day. Since the latter would have meant moving around for another two days of my vacation I declined and took the downgrade to a cheap room instead (see picture).
I asked for something in return and the only thing they wanted to offer me was a Lobster dinner, which I took and Dani denied. The Lobster wasn't that great either.
The hotel staff was rude and let me wait at the frontdesk for 10 minutes or more each time I went there and the room service did not respect the do not disturb sign. After returning from a day trip, we found our room cleaned up, the window blinds on the shared patio wide open and the light on, so everyone could see my camera equipment.
On top of all that, there was a new wing being constructed right outside our bedroom window, which meant at 7am we had all the construction noise too.
Conclusion: I do not recommend this hotel. There are better deals in the area. If you are looking for a nice resort in Playa del Carmen I recommend the Royal Porto Real. There are plenty of smaller hotels in Playa del Carmen that offer a better value for your money.

And also the proof that the Grand Porto Real is older than the Royal Porto Real (across the street under construction).

that hotel room looks as if you are in a old spanish villa , the beach looks really nice from this view it must be even more spectacular on the ground.
So they didnt offer you a discount or anything for all the inconvenience they had caused?? I know this happened to us once in Sydney and the motel gave us a night free.
Well we got a lobster dinner but quite frankly it wasn't that good and food was all inclusive anyways (except the lobster dinner of course). Plus I did get to stay some nights in the better hotel.
Did you have to pay the same price in the better hotel or more?
I was upgraded, but that wasn't the point. In another country I am always anxious to hit to road. Intead I had to wait in a hotels lobby for my rooms to be ready and all the other things associated with checking in. It was a colossal waste of time.

I am not sure what the complaint is about. From the photograph the place looks rather lovely. Maybe you have too high standards.
By my standards it was a good hotel. I just didn't like the fact that I made reservations and didn't get the room. Despite the fact that they put me in a better hotel, they had me move around quite often and then I ended up with a worse room than the one I booked.
Funny thing, just today I got coupons from them via email. Looked like several coupons offering $50 off or so.
Maybe I should try to sell them online for $20, since I won't have time to go back before September anyways. Any takers?
