Algeria
Can anyone tell me is it safe to travel in Algeria? A friend of mine is traveling there in the next few weeks and I have been told that there could be a lot of danger being a Western Woman? She is traveling with two other woman. I'm a bit concerned for her.

Unfortunately I have made the decision to stay away from any Arab country at this moment. I know that I am dong 99.9% of the people there injustice by saying this, but I value my life too much.
I would also love to see Jordan, but I guess it is even worse there.
North Africa is still among the safest of those regions and I think you should be fine, but I made up my mind with this.

Its best to be safe rather than sorry. its best to avoid these country now as the are so againt the west.

Algeria depends largely on tourism. They would be crazy not to take good care of tourists. I think as long as you travel with a group you should be perfectly fine. Just don't go alone.
When the fundamentalist government first went in, they stopped issueing tourist visas. Tourism or even a healthy economy is not a priority in many countries. Just as the police can be your enemy, not just ineffectual or subject to bribery, but really your enemy.
I'm not sure that I'd be going to Algeria, but things may have changed.
I certainly wouldn't be deciding not to go to a country because it is a Muslim country.
Everything will be fine just as though George Bush can keep his finger off the trigger or the weather forecast for Tehran might be 5000 degrees with mushroom clouds.
