Yosemite entrance CA-140 closed

Yosemite entrance CA-140 closed

Due to a rockslide, the entrance to Yosemite via CA-140 is now closed. The extense of the slide is immense which means that this route will most likely remain closed throughout the Summer of 2006.

You will now have to take the windy road CA-120 and probably have to expect a lot more traffic and delays.

Oh no

Darn. I was expecting visitors soon. Don't know if I would have gone all the  way to Yosemite, but it surely would have been nice to have the option. Although to me CA-120 isn't really any longer and in the summer maybe even faster, I am afraid it will be packed with traffic now.

Yeah, I saw it in the news

Yeah, I saw it in the news last night, too. It looked pretty bad. They also said that a lot of the stores and restaurants along CA-140 will suffer quite a bit this Summer since tourists are their main source of income.

End of September

The Highway 1 at Devils Slide will remain closed until the end of September. A tunnel is currently being constructed so that the original road is not being fixed.

You will have to take the CA-280, CA-92 detour from San Francisco to Half Moon Bay.

:-(

I remember that this was the most spectacular stretch between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Its a shame people will have to miss it now. Its also bad for the businesses along this road, who were living from tourism. I hope the new road will be as spectacular.

Due to its location, there are constantly landslides along Highway 1. It is always a good idea to check conditions before going.

UPDATE

Not really an update, more like a reminder. CA-140 remains closed. Please use CA-120 to get into the park and plan your trip accordingly. You can still reach El Portal from the park, in case you were wondering about lodging.

Hwy 1 at Devils Slide is scheduled to reopen on August 4th which is sooner than expected!

UPDATE2

CA-140 remains closed but:

Highway 1 at Devils Slide has reopened on the 4th.
