How do you pass time while on planes?
Sometimes I get nervous on planes. I get to think of airplane crashes and whatever might happen that we just don't know. Most of the time, I keep myself busy watching the entertainment channels being shown. Sometimes I read a magazine or a book.
For people nervous on planes, how do you calm yourself or pass time while on plane trips?

On very long flights i normally sleep watch movies and listen to music ,the longest flight i have ever been on was a 8 hour journey on BA.

Why don't you try and play a game of Sudoku on the plane? You can buy a little book and concentrate on solving the puzzles. Or try any other game where you have to focus a lot, maybe you can 'forget' that you're flying. I, myself, mostly watch the movies or read a very good book.

Hm. I guess if Helen is a little bit afraid she wouldn't be able to sleep. 8h is not too bad. I usually fly around 12hrs from SFO to MUC. Killing time is the hardest part. I cannot sleep in this tight and upright position and I cannot sleep since there are always little children nearby making lots of noise.
I simply watch the movies and try to doze a bit. Sometimes I read a travel book about the destination I am going to or I simply stare at the roof of the plane. There isn't really a lot you can do.
I think I have mentioned this before but I can not go passed the Ipod or MP3 player while on trips. You can take what ever music you want and it is easy to relax with your own choice. My kids will not go any where with out their's so before any trip you will find us all downloading different types of music on to our own Ipod's of course we all have different taste so if one gets bored with their's on the trip they can always swap with someone else's.
Wow! This is great! I was able to gather many ideas from different people and have summed them all up, e.g. music (ipod/mp3, etc.), book, puzzles, movie and many more. I guess the next time I am going to do is to plan ahead and take your suggestions with me. Thanks to all :)
I knew there was a similar thread. I couldn't find it because it was in the Asia forum under a different name. Here it is.
Seems like killing time on airplanes is something we all would like to know how to do.

Last time I was on a plane it took about 43 hours to get from MI to FL. Well, actually it probably took an hour or two, but there was so much turbulence the plane felt like a roller coaster and the flight felt like it was never gonna end. I passed time by worrying, panicking, crying, praying, and throwing up. Fun flight! On other (calmer) flights, I usually just read a book or some magazines, and spend a lot of time trying to get my ears to pop. Of course it's been quite awhile since I've flown, and since that last flight I really prefer driving.
I usually sleep.
but sometimes I read a book or watch the in-flight movie...
I really like to fly. But I always take a good book and read. It keeps my mind off of things and helps me relax. It seems I am there before I know it.
I'm an avid reader and usually pass the time on planes with one or more good books. In fact, I like flying because in my daily life I'm often too busy to sit down and read. On a plane, I don't have much choice!
Sometimes, if I'm really exhausted, I'll sleep a little as well.
I brought along a couple of magazines and had my book to read. Other than that, sleep.
