Pod Hotels

Pod Hotels

I was watching Amazing Race last night, and they were in Japan.  The contestants stayed at a pod hotel.  The sleeping spaces reminded me of a MRI machine.  It looked very confined and very unpleasant to those of us who are claustrophobic.  Is this type of hotel common in Asian countries? I'd never seen anything like that before and it was just amazing to me.

Airports

I have heard that a bunch of airports are implementing (or have implemented) those for the long layover. I think its an outstanding idea if you are not plagued by claustrophobia.

Otherwise you should probably travel light.

What about sanitary facilities?

I guess only the Japanese,

I guess only the Japanese, maybe the Koreans and the Chinese also, are having those pod hotels. I think Amazing Race just selected those kinds of hotels for the contestants to experience such kind of sleep in a pod hotel.

I guess it's not a bad

I guess it's not a bad idea, in fact after checking hotel prices for when my husband has to go away for school next month he jokingly said "they need pod hotels in Iowa" (assuming they'd have to be cheap).  He said he'd stay in one.  Not me.  Too much like being in a coffin.

Sanitary facilities... hadn't thought of that.  I can only assume there's a shared restroom somewhere.

Amazing Race is definitely good for showing you unusual places and things you might never see otherwise.

I once saw a report about a

I once saw a report about a bus tour. The bus was pulling a sleeping wagon, where people had to climb into a small tube. It was pretty much the same idea. I think there were 3 or 4 rows on top of each other.

Maybe it beats sleeping under the open sky for some but not for me. Unless there is some thread from the wildlife I would always prefer to sleep in the open.

My husband said it reminded

My husband said it reminded him of an MRI machine.  And, I know you can't use those if you're claustraphobic.  My mother-in-law couldn't even do an open MRI.  There's no way she'd be able to sleep in a pod.  I think my husband probably could do it though.  I agree with Andre, I'd rather sleep under the open sky.

Sometimes we just have to

Sometimes we just have to get out of our comfort zones and the Amazing Race contestants have always been showing us a life of hardship fit for survivors who are the fittest of all.

I have no problem with that myself, but I would still rather sleep under the open sky. I probably wouldn't be very comfortable there either. But I can imagine waking up at night and panicking, bumping my head when I jump up in the bed and getting a panick attack.

I think those contests are just for people who like to be on TV for their 15min of fame. They would do anything for that.

As I said, I don't mind sleeping in a tiny tent somewhere on a mountain when this is all I have, but in a  place with normal hotels I would not stay in one of those places.
