That really depends on you and where you are going. You can travel amazingly cheap. I met a couple in South America who were driving around in Busses. Since I didn't have as much time I was flying around. Busses are incredibly cheap.
If you book a flight far in advance you are paying far less.
Maybe there is even a chance of getting a job on a ship in return for a fare and maybe some spare cash.
Backpacking, camping and hitchhiking will save you a bundle and if you stay in hostels instead of expensive hotels lodging won't cost much either.
I guess what I am trying to say is that you can go traveling on any budget and quite frankly doing it on the cheap can be much more fun as you are preserving that sense of adventure. Whats the fun if the entire trip is already planned for you? At least this way you are really going to experience a foreign country and its people.
