Ever since Google Earth was available I have been using it to research travel locations. Recently I have been checking out some new places that were for rent in my neighborhood. I have been using Microsoft Virtual Earth. They have airplane photographs available too that give you a much better resolution then the satellite data. I believe they flew across major urban areas in the US and photographed them. The detail is much more revealing then that of the satellite data of google earth (see the cars in the screenshot of the submarine below). I think its a great tool for researching travel locations as well.

Submarine in San Francisco
Part of Pier 39 (San Francisco) with Seals.
(It's pretty good for checking neighborhoods for rentals too ;-) )
