I just read that the Solomon Islands (Islands Northeast of Australia) got hit very hard by the Tsunami. The waves completely drowned most of the islands including their capitol city.

Yes there where six people killed on the Island. The news has just been saying that maybe the Australian Government over reacted this morning but it is better safe than sorry. Sydney waters rose by 10cm.
I'd rather have the Government overreact one time instead of facing a disaster as it happened in New Orleans in 2005 where the Government overslept.
Seriously, there is nothing wrong with playing it safe.

One of the things the disaster management people in Florida have learned is that you can do just as much damage by being overly cautious and issuing hurricane warnings then end up with a tropical storm. A lot of problems during those couple of bad years were the result of people counting on the warning being overly cautious, and thinking they could ride it out, or that it would turn and miss them because it always had before. It's quite a balancing act, and since hurricanes do strange things, they really can't be sure where one is headed. Andrew, which until recently was the worst hurricane ever in Florida, was one of those. It headed up the east coast, then took an abrupt right turn and hit Homestead, which hadn't been expecting anything but heavy rain.
So if Australia issues too many warnings for 10 cm tidal waves, they risk having people ignore the warning for a big one.
