Florida Keys

Florida Keys

It's been a while since I've visited this site. In the last few years my husband and I have traveled to Peru and Italy which were absolutely fantastic. Now we're thinking of a trip to the Florida Keys which niether of us have ever seen, flying into Miami and then renting a shiny little convertible and driving to Key West, stopping and staying a few days along the way. Does anyone have any suggestions: where to stay, what to see, best time of the year to go?

Key Largo is very small, a dirt road, with a few restaurants and a few hotels, as a Floridian, it is a great place to visit for a weekend. The best place to stay in Key Largo is the Marriott. The only special place in Key Largo is called the Fish House. As someone who disliked, fish, I thought it was the best restaurant I ever went to. So if you plan on heading down to Key West and you are driving from the Miami airport, it is recommended that you stop at the Fish House either on your way there or back – it is worth it!Key West is a great town; you can choose to be on the beach, in the middle of the town in walking distance to all the restaurants or a few minutes away from the thick of things, where you might find a cute bed and breakfast in the woods. Key West is known for its ambiance, sunsets, fishing, fun restaurants and laid back atmosphere. Remember, many of the waterfront resorts near town are not on a real beach, you have to be a bit away from town to find beaches, for example, Pier House Resort and Caribbean Spa – probably one of the most popular and upscale, is waterfront – but I would not call it beach front. The Hyatt Key West Resort and Spa is always a winner, also “gulf front” not beach front. This is a personal choice. If you want all the luxuries of a full servide hotel overlooking the water, there are several popular hotels: Casa Marina – Mediterranean-style accommodations provide a luxurious hideaway, own beachOcean Key Resort – nestled between Key West Harbor and Historic Mallory Square. This luxury resort celebrates barefoot elegance inspired by a blend of Caribbean and South Floridian cultures. If you do not care about overlooking the water, and want in the midst of everything, do to the heron House- a historic house, well known Key West hotel. If you want to get away from it all, check out - An Island Oasis Bed and Breakfast.Check out www.dunhillvacations.com, which compiles the top deals from the best travel companies.Even if you do not see particular Key West resorts you want, if you go to the U.S. packages section, Florida section or click through the Travelocity or BookIt.com banners (all these sites have specials for Key West), you can peruse these sites to book what you are looking for and still get the discounts.

Restaurants: Sloppy Joes is a Key West must, you will really get that laid back Key West feeling there. Of course, you can always go to http://www.keywest.com/ for all information about Key West

Florida Keys

Thanks for the information and suggestions. We're planning a very laid back trip - we'd kind of like to blend in - do some snorkeling, kayaking, laying around drinking something tall and cool as we make our way to Key West! The Heron House is one of the places we are considering in Key West - we prefer being in walking distance, not necessarily on the beach. We'll put the Fish House and Sloppy Joe's on our list too because we also love to eat. Thanks again! We're planning our trip for next April because my daughter and son-in-law want to come with us (sure to be lots of fun and partying there! So much for laid back!) - I'll be sure to post some comments on how it turns out.

I have relatives in that

I have relatives in that live in the Keys, I will have to check out Sloppy Joes, that looks very cool.

I've never been to Florida

I've never been to Florida let alone the Keys.  I would like to go someday.  I took a geography class and learned alot about them.  The formation of the Keys and how they will continue to develop etc.
