Florida- Discovery Cove Where You Swim with the Dolphins

My daughter did this for the first time yesterday. She said it was so great. As a Florida residence you get a discount to $220 a person. Otherwise it is about $300 per person. However, you get a nice breakfast and a week's worth of visits at either Sea World or Busch Gardens. They only allow 1500 people in the park a day.You can also snorkel. The whole time is from 9am-5pm. It's a once in a lifetime experience according to her.

This is one of my dreams to

This is one of my dreams to swim with the dolphins. I actually just watched a show about this the other night. The way these dolphins just seem to understand their trainers just amazes me.

Dolphins are really

Dolphins are really intelligent.  They are one of the 'self-aware' species, intelligent enough and aware of themselves enough to recognize themselves in a mirror.  Most animals think it is another animal.

When you swim with them, all the dolphins are female.  They used to let people swim with male dolphins, but they tried to have sex with the human females, and caused some injuries.  Funny the things you read about when you live in Florida.  I actually think more strange things happen there, and more strange people live there, than in any other state with the possible exception of California.

Sounds expensive at first,

Sounds expensive at first, but I think it is well worth the price. My friend did this a few months ago and had a blast.

I would *love* to swim with

I would *love* to swim with the dolphins one day. I think it would be worth every penny.  I had heard about male dolphins trying to have sex with women.  Sounds dangerous!  I am betting the female dolphins would be a joy to swim with.  Such a dream this would be.  One day!!!

Does the $300/person include the breakfast and a week's worth of visits?  If so, that isn't a bad price!

Some thoughts

Is that what happened? I remember watchin a video on TV showing an attack by a Dolphin.

Well, to be perfectly honest, if you had to swim with annoying people every day, you probably would just go bananas one day, especially if those things you swim with are more stupid then you but you have to do it anyways.

Um. Can't really deny that, although I think that we have just more of everything in California (including very bright people).

We took our son and he had

We took are son and he had a blast. As mentioned, the dolphins can get a bit aggressive. So if you are a little timid, you may want to think twice. Not to be blue, but the dolphins are a randy bunch and things can get awkward at times. However, its an experience I would not miss.

 Have fun!

I think there are more

I think there are more stories about strange happenings and odd people that come out of Florida than anywhere else.  The only reason California even comes close is they have Hollywood, and all the odd characters that the movie and TV business attracts.

I swam with wild dolphins once in New Zealand.  Or sort of.  You go out on a boat, and if a pod goes by, you get in the water really quickly and hope they feel like playing.  They didn't when I did it.  I swam with them for about 30 seconds.

Later, though, I sat in the bow of the boat with my feet danling over the edge, and the dolphins came to surf in the wake.  There they were, just inches from my toes!

I don't think I'd ever do the swim thing in Orlando, because for me that is much, much too expensive.

I read that somewhere that

I read that somewhere that the dolphins are all female because the males get a little aggressive. We are really considering this when we go on our vacation to Disney. We have been thinking about this trip for awhile now and hope to go next year or the year after at the latest. It is a big trip for the boys and quite exspensive so we just have to plan good.

Exciting

It sounds really exciting.

I have heard that they use this in therapy as well, probably because the dolphins have some sort of calming effect, but I am not sure.

I am wondering if one could also go swimming with (well fed) orcas? Somehow they fascinate me a lot.

Dolphin gigolos?!

Okay, I've officially moved "swimming with dolphins" from my "maybe" category to my "on a cold day in h---" category. Seriously, though, I'm not a very confident swimmer anyway, and the last thing I need is a randy dolphin. With my luck I'd drown and leave the ME stuck with filling out a really interesting death certificate!
