California Gold Country Impressions

California Gold Country Impressions

Allright, after my last post about Sacramento, here are some impressions from the Gold Country. You can click on any of the pictures to find approximate GPS coordinates of any of them (its great for navigation if you are trying to find a spot). We are going from north to south in this series.

Malakoff Diggins

The image above shows Malakoff Diggins State Park. Its an alien Landscape created by hydraulic mining. In the image you can see the old water pipes and a water gun that was used for mining.

Nevada City

This is in Nevada City a charming old Gold Mining Town. It is also referred to as the "Queen of the Northern Mines".

Bridgeport Covered Bridge

Bridgeport Covered bridge is longest single span covered bridge in the world. Its a bit off track but its a nice detour.

Sonora Church

The St. James Episcopal Church in Sonora. Somehow I get the feeling this is where they got the idea for High Plains Drifter (you know the movie with Clint Eastwood where he paints the town red).

Knights Ferry Bridge

The Knights Ferry covered bridge. I passed it many times on the way to Yosemite.

Beautiful pictures! Did you know that Dahlonega, Georgia was really the first gold rush town in the United States. We have a vacation home there and are into gold panning. It's beautiful there too.

I had no idea. Is it anything like the pictures above? Can you still find gold there?

Yes, Dahlonega was the first gold rush town. Most people don't know that. The beauty is as gorgeous as your pictures. There are a lot of small unique towns around it. We are surrounded by the Applachian Mountains. Here are some articles I wrote on gold panning and Dahlonega's history. We plan to retire there. We pan for gold all the time. Lots of gold still there and Gerogia's gold I have been told is the most purest in the world. That is what the gold miners there say.

Andre, I'll be going up April 19th for 4 days to Dahlonega. We go up every 5-8 weeks for about 4 days. I'll take some pictures if I think of it and post it here. We also are planning on going to Cherokee, North Carolina which is my first time there. So I"ll give you an update on that too. In the fall, Dahlonega has it's gold rush festival where people come all over the world. IT's really neat to see it..very Applachian.

One of my cousins and his

One of my cousins and his family used to live in Stockton, and I visited him there right after I got back from Africa.  We took one of those day excursion buses up to Tahoe, and I think we went through some of the gold mining country.  I do remember it was a beautiful ride.
