Anyone Travelling By Car Between Georgia and Florida Beware of Main Highway Closings

Due to the fires in southeast Georiga and north Florida, highway 75 which is the main Interstate has been closed for long periods of time and they don't know when this will stop. The fires are still not contained. I live in the Orlando area and can even smell them here.

We got stuck in it!!

We got stuck in it!! ARGH!!!  We were making our way up from Orlando to Atlanta.  It was a HORRIBLE traffic snarl.   We ended up adding 3 hours to our drive time due to the forced detours.

AVOID this area!!!

Oh shoot! My husband and I were just talking about it whether we will go Saturday. I heard the fire is only 30% contained. Thanks for the info. We normally leave early and I don't know if that might help.

Stephanie, Can I ask you when did you leave? Was it in the past few days?  So it took you about 10 hrs to Atlanta?

My father in law just got

My father in law just got stuck in a two hour traffic jam on his way to Florida last week. Needless to say he was not a happy camper once he got through it. He says he will be finding another route for the drive home.

Thanks Tater for the information. We are going to decide Friday whether we make our trip to Dahlonega, Ga. We weighed going up I-95 which is up the coast but that is like 300 miles our of our way and it would end up being the same. It all depends on the weather but it sounds like winds will pick up Friday. We need rain!

There really aren't many

There really aren't many ways around things in Florida, since it is so narrow.  I've tried doing secondary roads, and except for 301, which obviously will be smoked out, they are really pokey.  This such a bad time of the year, before the rainy season.

When I first saw the post I thought it was going to be about some major construction thing, and I had visions of problems when I get back in October.

Check this

I just realized this thread is somewhat related to what I posted over here. In this post I explained how to find out about the current road condition (incidentally using Florida Fires as the example).
