When Do You Start Packing?

When Do You Start Packing?

When you're gong on a long trip, say 1 week or more, when do you start packing? My mom starts two weeks in advance, my dad starts three or four days. My usual pattern is to go into panic mode and start throwing everything in the suitcse about two hours before the plane is due to take off. Oddly enough, I forget very little, but I'd kind lof like to be able to plan ahead.

Any suggestions on a more organizaed way of doing things?

Not really, since I am exactly like you. I am a very late packer.

Usually, I go somewhere very early in the morning (lets say a flight), which means I need to get up at 4am or 5am. So I try to start packing the night before, but I am a procrastinator, which means I won't get started before midnight.

I guess I am the worst to give advice.

My dad however used to have a list of all kinds of things he could possibly need (depending on where he went). He traveled a lot for business. So he used to mark everything off that he put in the suitcase, and if only things were left that he didn't need where he went (e.g. suncream if he went somewhere where it snowed) he had the piece of mind to know that he had everything.

I usually am taking a few

I usually am taking a few things out at the last minute in order to get my pack closed.  But I sort of start at least a week before.  I set aside a spot in my room for the stuff I'm taking with me but don't need until then.  I separate out the clothes I'm planning on taking, which are usually not the same ones I generall wear at home anyway.  I find my travel alarm, and put it in the pile, and add other things as days go by.

I also have a master 'before you leave' list that I go through to make sure I've covered everything.

I used to have a friend that would make some of the most ridiculous plans.  Once she decided at the last minute to go along with some friends on  a ski trip.  OK, that's fine.  But she was giving a big dinner party for twenty people the night before.  Manageable, but just.  She had also just sold her house and was beginning to pack for her move.  Unh, unh, way over the top.  She had to leave for the ski trip with dirty clothes in her suitcase, and hit the laundromat as soon as she arrived, instead of the slopes!

When do you start packing.

A lot of people are very organized, and start packing early. Know matter where I go I am a last minute packer. I do a lot beter packing at the last minute. It seems that when I try to pack early I am constantly putting in and taking out. So when it is time to go I don't what I have and what I don't have. I guess you could just call me a last minute person. But I am good at it.

I too am a late packer. I

I too am a late packer. I don't usually have a problem with this, though, since I'm usually pretty efficient time-wise when it comes to packing. I usually at least try to pack two or 3 days ahead of time for longer trips, though.

I used to travel every week

I used to travel every week for work, out on Monday morning, back on Friday evening.  I had a whole second set of toileties, and when I was going to the same place every week, I left things behinc at the hotel and put a suit in for dry cleaning.  I could totally pack in about five minutes.

I'm a late packer, but I do

I'm a late packer, but I do pack to a list, and it isn't usually too much of a rush.  The things I forget tend to be the things I use on a daily basis, and only have one of - e.g. my mobile phone - I very often put that on to charge the night before, and leave it charging when I go to get the flight :(

I write down a list of

I write down a list of things I want to take with me a good week ahead.  Then, as clothes get washed/ironed, I lay them out on the bed in the spare bedroom, ready for packing.  At the end, I'll include the bits-and-pieces, like tooth-brush, passport etc.  Everything on my list is ready for packing, but I don't want clothes getting too creased.  So, a few hours before leaving, I just pack everything into my suitcase  - remembering to cross it off my list.  I take the list with me, so that I can use it when packing to come back home!

I'm afraid I'm the same

I'm afraid I'm the same when it comes to packing for our holidays. But one hint I might give you is to write a list over maybe a two week period. That is what I do. Then as I pack the items I mark them off. Even the night before I leave I sometimes am still adding to the list then I make sure they are packed just before I leave.

I've started to copy a

I've started to copy a friend, and keep master lists.  Since I go away for months (I've been gone ten months this time), I have a long prep list for both going and coming.  It has less to do with packing, though, than it has to do with things I've got to get settled before I leave.
