Travelling Diary

Travelling Diary

A tip while travelling is to create routines that highlight the holiday experience, such as filling in a holiday diary, talking about the best part of the day at dinner, or setting challenges for the next day. On our last trip a couple of weeks ago. We gave all the kids a travelling diary and encouraged them all to write in them each day or evening. It worked really well. And they are great as a keepsake.

I can imagine it kept them

I can imagine it kept them pretty quiet too. Good tip.

Usually I am totally against routine. I am the spontaneous type. When I am on a roadtrip, I never get a hotel until it gets dar. I just hate booking ahead, since I won't know where I am at for Sunset (I always try to get good pictures during sunset). Usually I have a Best Western Road Atlas with me (its more like a where is the hotel atlas and not very usable as a Road Atlas). I then book a hotel through the phone that I think I can reach before midnight. This way I can cover as much ground as possible.

I am actually keeping some travel diaries here (in the main articles section). I need to write a few new ones, but I have gotten a bit lazy recently.

Travel Photos

I have been keeping track

I have been keeping track of my travels few years ago. I placed photos in an album with some descriptions and writings below them, plus the itinerary of the trip and some more info.

Right now, I have been lazy, too. What I have done is just to keep the pics and other infos in place and then I will have to get back to them when I have the time. Sometimes I am thinking of creating my album online. I think there is a software/program for that? I remembered seeing a site where we can feature our albums or personal pics.

Souvenirs
We have always had a tendency to collect a lot of souvenirs and mementos along with photos. I even have rocks in my aquarium that I can tell you exactly where each one came from. It may sound funny but something as simple as a rock or a statuette on the shelf can bring back memories and stimulate conversations about past trips.
I do all that.  I like to

I do all that.  I like to get useful souvenirs, so that I will be reminded of my travels in the course of my daily routine once I am settled back home.  All of my wooden spoons, for instance, come from different countries.  One is a spatula-shaped thing that I used when I lived in Japan.  I have serving dishes and baskets from my time in South Africa.  And cheap earrings from everywhere.  Every morning I get dressed and choose from the countries I've visited.

Traveling Diary

I have an Aunt and uncle that have traveled all over the world. And they keep a diary wherever they go. And they love looking back on them. It brings many fond memories. I think I am going to start doing that. I think it would be fun to where you have been and what you did.

It's funny ...I've traveled

It's funny ...I've traveled all over the world, and I never keep diaries nor do I take many pictures either.  It's all in my mind with great memories of some places.  I find it's more fun to bring up those memories every once in a while because something jogs them ...and you think, oh I was there and I did this or that.  Besides, there's nothing more boring usually than looking at someone else's trip photos lol.

I never used to take the

I never used to take the pictures or keep the diaries for anyone else but me.

I did do slide shows at lunch after I got back from trips.  They were pretty popular.  I needed to take reservations and do several shows each trip (mostly because the conference rooms only held eight people).

Then I started group e-mails, and now I sort of keep a blog.

I just have a personal

I just have a personal travel diary, and that's all I need. On my last trip, I almost filled up an entire notebook with information and thoughts.

I completely agree. In fact it is what prompted my to write an article on the 10 Most common Photographic Mistakes. Obviously there is a big need, since it got read close to 100,000 times the first day.

What I am trying to say is that the reason people don't like to look at endless parades of poeple in front of monuments is the boring and static nature of those photos that are very uninspiring.

I can't remember exactly how some things look like that I had seen a few years ago and it bugs me. I wish I would have taken more photos back then. Sometimes I like to look through old photos, as they tend to bring back so many memories. I can't imagine visiting any place without capturing photos anymore.

I never used to be big on that sort of thing. I guess its kind of why I use this website, so I can keep and share travel experiences.

I've found that my various means of collecting memories don't overlap that much.  I'll write about things in my diary, but I won't have a picture.  Or I'll have tons of pictures of something that I never mentioned in my diary.  I buy souvenirs and don't have any pictures of the market where I bought them.  And I'll have very clear, sharp memories of something, and neither notes nor photos.

Funny thing for a writer to say, but I never--well, rarely--keep a tavel diary either. It seems like experiencing it is so much better than writing about it. Oh, I may scribble down an occasional story or funny incident here or there, but on the whole I'd much rather live it and remember it than photograph it or write about it.
