Traveling With Dog to Europe

Traveling With Dog to Europe

I saw a posting on this forum a few weeks ago regarding this topic and I had some additional questions that I hope someone may be able to answer.

I am planning to fly from the US to Bulgaria in Early August and was hoping to be able to bring my 4lb Chihuahua along. She does not have the Microchip yet (looking into how to get that) and had a rabies shot last October. I will be flying through London Gatwick to Munich to Sofia on Northwest Airlines/Lufthansa. Is it possible to get everything arranged before flying, or am I out of luck? Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't know how to answer this correctly, but until someone else who might have done this before replies, I just wanted to say, make an appointment with your vet asap. I don't know what injections are required, but you might have to go more then once to get all injections to avoid having your dog placed in quarantine.

You still have a month, so I think you should be o.k. if you start now (again, I have never done this before).

I'm not sure you can take the dog at all.  I know that all dogs entering England used to be required to go through a three month quarantine, as they have no rabies on the island and intend to keep it that way.  I don't know if this still applies, but I think the quarantine was for transit as well as entering the country.

Did you tell the airline when you booked that you were bringing a dog?  I'm assuming you didn't, as the airline would then have informed you of any regulations.  You may have serious problems as there is no guarantee that any of the countries along your route will let your dog in.

You need to check into this as soon as possible.

I assume you intend for the dog to fly in cargo, as I don't think any of the airlines allow pets in the cabins any more.  As I typed that I realized I don't have any real reason to think that, but I'm pretty sure it's true.
