Pay a little more for luxury
I'm usually pretty frugal, but I figure if I'm going to spend several hundred (or even thousand) dollars on a trip, I might as well go the extra mile and pay a little bit more for the things that matter to me. For instance, I love theater. If I can pay $50.00 and get a nosebleed seat or $75.00 and get an orchestra seat, I will go for the $75.00 every time.
What about you? What luxuries are you willing to pay more for?

I often pay something extra for good food, although most local foods are often cheaper then food especially prepared for tourists.
Sometimes I like a bigger car too or a convertible.
Food, definitely. And I'll pay a lot for a special tour or trip. For instance, I went to Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand, stayed in a hostel, but instead of doing the cheap hike up the face of the glacier, I sprung for the helicopter ride up on to the middle of the glacier and three hour hike along its hills and valleys and ice caves and streams. It was magic, and worth every penny. Last year I went to the Taj Mahal twice, just because I wanted to, while other backpackers were complaining about the cost. Once in Paris I stayed in a fourth floor walkup on Rue d'Ecole, where I had to pay to take a shower in the common facilities. But then I bought tickets for the Paris Opera Ballet.
I'll also spring for a nice room occasionally. Not a luxury room, but one with my own bath, air-conditioning, and cable TV. I'm talking about travel in backpack territory. In the States, I've come to want the chain motel with the free wi-fi rather than the mom and pop places. Fortunately even some of the budget chains offer free wi-fi now.
Oh, and I'll take budget airlines, but I almost always opt for the VIP luxury bus.
When I go some where I would rather pay a little more for where I am staying. I like a nice luxurious place to stay in.
I don't like to spend too much on hotel rooms, partly because I am mostly somewhere taking photographs anyways. I do usually go for the Best Western because I can rely on the fact that they have pretty high standards, WiFi and good breakfast (most of them anyways).
I do enjoy good food though, and I like going out for a good Lunch or Dinner.
I also don't mind spending on trips, as long as it gets me to see things. I won't ever think twice about a fare.
I also make sure my hotel is in a safe area and that it is clean. It might cost a little more in some places but I think thats worth it.
Entrance Fees is another thing I won't think twice about, even though it bugs me if places like Universal Studios charge $60 a person. Thats far too high in my opinion, but I'll pay it if I want in.
Has anyone ever paid to upgrade their plane seats?

I never go to a 5* hotel because is very expensive, and really, a 3* or 4* is very good for a family travel.
With hotels, I don't like the ones that are so low budget that you feel like you're going to meet Cousin Eddie (from the "Vacation" series) coming out of the bathroom, but I don't need five star luxury either. A nice mid-range hotel will do me just fine.
It also depends a bit on what kind of trip you are taking and where you will be. I checked into a regular hotel in Bombay, just because I was tired, feeling sick, and the city seemed overwhelming. I had a tiny room, but air-con, cable, and best of all, room service that cost about the same as the restaurants. I tipped, which no one else there does, and I had the best service!
I really like great bed and breakfast in the area. They usually offer great food and accomodation. You can find plenty of them on bnbstar.com or in Canada on bnbstar.co.uk. You can get discounts if you reserve through this site Other good sites inspectedinns.org or travelegia.com offer more luxuary choices. Enjoy...
When it comes to night buses, I am willing to pay more for the best category. It simply makes no sense to save a few dollars and then you don't sleep well and cannot enjoy the next precious day of your holidays. On the other hand, for day trips I have no problems with taking ordinary buses.
I have never taken the bus on overnight trips. Where can you book those?
Souvenirs and the specialties of the place are always on top of my mind when I'm traveling. Sometimes I spend much more on souvenirs, searching and tasting delicacies and specialties of the place than my usual travel budget. :)
Hi toptraveller,
the buses I am referring to run in most south-american countries (there are no comparable buses in europe or north america). The first class service has many different names depending on the company and country - it might be calles "cama suite", "tuto leito", or "ejecutivo". Normally you would book the buses directly at the terminal before departure (e.g. Retiro station in Buenos Aires, or Tiete terminal in Sao Paulo, or Novo Rio terminal in Rio de Janeiro). Some of the larger companies also offer online booking, or you can always ask a travel agency to get your tickets for you.
Thanks for the info Benco. I'd rather not book from a travel agent if I have the chance to book locally ore online.

That explains why I didn't know this, although bus travel is somewhat popular in Europe and travel buses are to be seen in the US as well ;-)
I have tried the link in your signature, but its dead.
i would definitely pay extra for food -- delicious food that is. i don't mind paying a little extra for other luxuries too as long as it will fit my budget!

hands down, I'd pay extra for delicious food, and to be honest, I'd pay a little bit more for a nicer hotel room, nothing beats a plush soft bed after a day in town
I'm not paying more for hotel... I'm kind of active person , so i'm not spending to much time in room. I'd pay extra for delicious food tooooo :)

I'm kinda a frugal person so I make it to a point not to be "too luxurious" but just like everyone else a good food is worth an extra $$$
I am usually always on a budget but i am not adverse to some luxury, for example on some internal flights in the states i sometimes get the chance to upgrade to first class for like £20, so i have done that a couple of times and it is well worth it! The only bad thing is when you go have to go back to exconomy for the long flight back to the UK.
