My Addiction :(
I cant help myself. Before any trip, anywhere, I find a new gadget. A new gadget that I need. The latest one is a video camera (camcorder). i want one so badly! A nice new shiny toy! I'm addicted to "travel gadgets".
What is your vice when it comes to travel?

Hahaha, exactly like me. I love my gadges, can't live without em.
Last time it was a Handheld GPS (now I am recording track logs and height profiles and just yesterday I figured out how to match the GPS track logs with my EXIF time stamps of my photos to generate EXIF GPS location stamps (now I can autmatically put my photos on a map for a virtual tour or something).
It has other useful applications too.
Now its a Passport 8500 X50 Radar Detector to escape the scrutiny of the cops.
So I guess one can say I am addicted to gadgets too.

My brother in law had a Passport Radar Detector and got caught with it in his car when he was randomly pulled over for a breath test. The fine was unbelievable. He got into a lot of trouble.
They are perfectly legeal here in the states. I don't even bother turning it off when I am standing next to a cop on a traffic light. You should know the law of the country you are in.
I believe in Germany ownership is legal but not operation. So it would be o.k. to unplug it. Unless the cop can proof that you used it, you should be fine

Gee I didnt know that they where legal in some countries. They are not in Australia and just presumed that it was the same in each country... Wow
I don't think they are legal in all states. I'm pretty sure that on my last road trip there were some signs that warned against using them.
They are legal in all states that I drive in. Radar detectors are pretty much legal everywhere:

As you can see, not much in terms of being illegal. Even scanners (I don't even know what this is) are legal in most states:

The Escort is a detector, so the first map applies. It's legal everywhere except D.C. and Virginia.
It's different with radar jammers. THOSE are illegal in pretty much all states. I am just detecting it.
The only signs I ever see is "Speed checked by Radar" or "Speed checked by Aircraft". I have never seen a sign warning against usage of a Radar Detector and even if they were there, they probably wouldn't be legally binding. The only sign I would believe (but have never seen) is one warning against Radar Jammers.
I always go to Virginia and DC to visit friends when I do a road trip, so that explains that.

I guess for active travelers, gadgets are truly among the must-haves!
