Long car rides

Long car rides

So.. how do you keep yourself busy during a long car ride?  My husband and I love to play 20 questions.   He is a really good guesser, though, and I am not good at all.  He'll end up giving me like 75 guesses before he finally tells me the answer.

Growing up, we often played the alphabet game and slug bug.

How about you all?  Do you know of any great car games to help pass the time?

Well

I have driven almost 900 miles only stopping for gas more then once.

Usually I have a lot of fun driving and I don't particularly need to be kept busy, but often we just talk about the people we see in other cars and make up funny stories about them, or I race someone and the misses gets upset (another fun game I guess).

Most of the time however we are talking about the destination and about the things we want to do there, about politics and other things.

Often I appreciate the silence while I am flying through the landscape zig zagging through traffic.

I am not a good person to

I am not a good person to travel with in a car for long distances because I tend to read my book. Which does not help any keeping my husband entertained. Maybe I should start reading aloud.

We usually talk and bring a

We usually talk and bring a large collection of CDs to sing along to. I get headaches when I read in moving vehicles, so I can't do that. I sometimes do word searches and things like that. I've even brought along a coloring book once...doesn't matter than I'm in my 20s, still works wonders for boredom!

Or

You could also just enjoy the landscape and look out the window. Somehow I never get tired of it.

Obviously, toptraveler, you

Obviously, toptraveler, you have never driven through west Texas.  The first five minutes of landscape is bare ground.  So is the next 10 hours or so.

I have some CDs that I sing along with.  I can only do this when I'm traveling alone as I have a rather frightening singing voice.  I also have some Spanish lessons that I use to work on my accent.  That's how I learned to roll my r's.  And I say all the numbers I see along the road out loud in Spanish, so I get practice.

One of my friends listens to books on CD, but I'm afraid I'd get so wrapped up in the story that I'd forget I was supposed to be driving.

I hate long car rides. Even

I hate long car rides. Even with the inconvenience of airport security, I'd much rather fly.

If I'm not the one driving, I usually pass the time by trying to sleep, read, watch a movie on my laptop, etc.

If I am the one driving, I sing along with music, listen to books on CD, daydream, etc.

One of my sister's friends was killed after she fell asleep driving her car, so I'm pretty careful about not driving when I'm sleepy, distracted, etc.

Long car trips

My husband and i enjoy taking long car trips. We usually talk about things that we see along the way. We never seem to get bored.

I actually enjoy listening to books on CD.  It is amazing how the time can fly when listening to a really good story.  I become engrossed, but am still able to concentrate on driving.

Unfortunately, I get motion sick so I am unable to read or do puzzle books (when I am a passenger, obviously)  I can't even read the map without feeling sick!

I tried that a couple of times at home. I have a bit of insomnia (stress I guess) so I have a hard time falling asleep. I decided to listen to some Audio Books and bam I was sleeping.

For me those things work better then sleeping pills (no matter how interesting the subject and how good the reader is). I guess it would be dangerous for me to listen to those while driving.

Most of our travelling is back and forth from our home in Florida to the mountains of Georgia. We listen to CDs but it also gives my husband and I a lot of good quality time to riminisce and just talk in general. However, once we get nearer to the mountains, we don't talk much, but enjoy the scenary.

passing time on car rides

My friends and I play a game of shopping for real estate. If we're driving through the countryside, we try to find the ideal cottage. Mind you, it doesn't actually have to be for sale.  We're just indulging in our dreams, but it certainly makes us look closely at the surroundings.

Haha, that sounds like a lot of fun. I have done something similar too. I always imagine how it would be to live in the place I am currently passing by.
