I have always heard lavender calms you. But I have never thought of putting in your car to keep you calm while driving. Good idea.
I don't know. If you calm yourself too much on a long drive you might fall asleep. Isn't it better to stay alert?

I believe this to be true. It seems to help babies calm down while in their bath water as well as putting baby lotion on them. But, whether it's actually the lotion or the rubbing it into the skin, can be debated. But, either way, if this calms the baby down, I'm all for it. What can it hurt to put some in the car with you? Just the nice smell is enough to justify it for me.
I've always found Lavender very calming as well. And for that very reason, I hate to use it during car trips when I probably need to be awake and peppy. If I'm driving long distance, I usually try to scent the car with something a little edgy like cinnamon or peppermint or basil.
So, it seems that you probably shouldn't use lavender when you are driving unless you are sure it won't make you sleepy. I think I would opt for peppermint if I was driving...it seems soothing, yet energizing.
