Interesting. When I think about the charges I ran up on my cellphone in Peru I shudder. I had to make a few calles due to missed flights or pickups being late and a bunch of other things.
On the bright side, I was quite amazed that my cellphone even worked

Do you use your cell phone much while travelling? I dont ring out on it much I just like to have it in case of emergencies plus if something goes wrong back at home and they need to get me quickly. It's not always a cheap idea to use your cell phone.
Absolutely yes. Not for chit chat but for important things. I was stranded in Juliaca (Peru) and I had to make some calls to my travel agent to reschedule tours and stuff like that, I had to make a hotel reservation on the fly before everyone else on the same flight did (not enough hotel rooms in the city). Our pickup wasn't there right away so I called the agent who called them .....
I wasn't exactly happy about the charges, but I was very glad I had my phone. (made a couple of calls from mexico too).
It only took me a while to figure out how to call a local number in Lima from my US cellphone (I think I just had to call it without any country code or area code, not sure anymore though).

For me, the important thing is that your cellphone works. When you're in a place not your own, you need a phone for emergency purposes and a cellphone that you can use anywhere comes in handy. In order to do this, do you have to put it in international roaming mode Andre or none at all?
What I needed was a European cell phone I could use during my trips abroad.
And after doing some research I decide to stay with http://callineurope.com/; the rates they offer look more competitive compared to few sources I verified. And I won't have to pay any monthly fees and will be able to reroute my US number.
great information- i recently went to europe and my phone bill was really high. i will look into this- im sure its cheaper than paying more than a dollar per minute!
