Register your travel and contact details with the local Australian embassy, commission or consulate. Don't carry expensive cameras, or too much cash or jewellery. Stick in groups, don't drink too much and stay out of obviously dodgy areas. Tell family how regularly they can expect to hear from you and stick to it-no matter what!!

I think this part is very important. Even if it is only a quick email letting them know you are okay.
