Always call ahead to make sure your flight is not cancelled
I had the unfortunate circumstances of not checking with the airline before I showed up at the airport even though there was no bad weather so I could not have imagined that the flight would have been cancelled, but indeed it was. I can't tell you the chaos that this caused at the airport. So check with your airline before you go to the airport even when the weather is fine.
Good tip and don't rely on Orbitz trip alerts either (they are usually a bit late, when you are already at the check in terminal).

Long, long ago, when air travel was really something of a luxury, airlines used to telephone you at home to let you know that your flight was going to be delayed an hour, so that you wouldn't leave too early for the airport.
If you aren't at home, and the flight is canceled because of a mechanical problem, and it requires an overnight stay, the airline has to give you a hotel room. So you have to go to the airport anyway, and go through all the hassles in order to get a free room.
Wow cindy, its amazing how things change! I have only ever had 1 EXTREMELY late flight, but even if I called in 1 hour early they would have said it was fine.
