Belgium places to visit
I would recommend to visit following towns in Belgium:
1.Brussels with Maneken/Jenneken Pis, beers, fries, mousils and Atomium
2.Namur in the great fest: Viva Wallonia! (end of August) It really worth to visit - very funny!
3.Brugge in the day of sand figures festival.
4. Waterloo in the day of Napoleon fight.
NOTE: Charleroi and Liege might be dangerous in evening time!
best regards

Yeah I remember the Atomium. I also remember that I thought the main square in Brussels was the most beautiful I have ever seen. It was one of the most colorful places and the facades of the buildings really left an impression (I guess it was about 15 years ago).
Here is a photo i found lingering in my photobucket account (its not mine but free for use):
Brussels rightfully deserves to be the capitol of the European Union.
BTW: I find "Maneken Pis" sounds hilarious.

I've been through Belgium several times, but never stopped there. I took a bus/ferry from Amsterdam to London, and it went through Brugge to pick up a passenger. Even from a bus it was absolutely beautiful.
Someday I want to go to a town called, I think, Dom en Prix (or Pris) where the Belgian branch of my family came from.

On the other hand, Liège has a lot of history, and it is the home of waffles! (My grandma had family there, so maybe I'm biased). Seriously though, Liege also has many parks and public gardens. It's not as eerily romantic as Bruges, but it has many charms. I agree; It is worth being cautious at night, but it is stll not not as dangerous as some large cities in France or in North America.
