Trinidad and Tobago is on my list of places I want to visit, largely because it was spared the fate of most of the other British colonies.  The new governor had noticed that on many islands, nearly all the trees had been cut down, and that when the trees were gone, the rain stopped and the islands became deserts.  Long before there was any real science behind it, he made it illegal to cut down trees, so that it would still rain there.
