Temple/monastery stay

Temple/monastery stay

To my dear fellow travel lovers,

For a while now I have been searching for temples or monasteries where I could stay long term. This to get away from all the mess and stress in this life. It doesnt really matter what country it is in (Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia...) as long as I can unwind, relax and get all the time to myself.
All information is welcome. I dont mind doing a bit of work in exchange for (part of) the stay or learning the way of Buddha, Tai Chi, martial arts, getting some discipline in my body, et cetera.

Thank you for yor help!

Religious

I think one of the main issues is that most of those serve a religious purpose (if they are not museums already). So in order to get in, you might have to accept the religion and live accordingly.

I cant say i am totally

I cant say i am totally into Buddha, but their way of thinking appeals to me. If staying in such a temple teaches me who I am and what I want, then so be it.

seriously?

Are you really that serious? It's not that I have something against monasteries and temples of some sort, but I am sure there are other places where you can relax, unwind, and learn martial arts and tai chi.

Anyhow, don't you want to explore exotic locales like Morocco? Visiting the beautiful attractions in Marrakech and other Moroccan cities really relaxes me. It might work for you too. Embarassed

Why not

I can relate to the wish of solitude. I am stressed out most of the time and annoyed by my neighbors. Would be nice to have a year of piece and quiet.

To answer your original question, cast your peepers on that offer:

Temple Stay in Korea

That should be exactly what you are looking for Smile .

I don't have any information on how that actually works though, but why not give it a shot and let us all know how it went when you come back (if ever Wink)

Monastery in Italy

Or you could do that in Italy (who knew they offered this in Europe).

Here is an article from the times about this.

yes, i am that serious. why

yes, i am that serious. why would i go (and search again for a long time) to another place if i can find what i want to find in a monestery? there's a whole fun fair going on in my head for quite some time now and i have enough of that. peace and silence is what i need to become clear again.

i have been to morocco. i liked it a lot, even though they are screaming and yelling the whole the time ; ) . and i have stayed on islands where you can relax. but the problem is that there is still too much to do and then i will get distracted and get sucked back into a busier life. with a busy head...

tt and andre, thanks for your suggestions. i'll go throught it.

How long do you want to

How long do you want to stay.  There are some programs in Thailand that offer ten-day silent retreats.  I think there is one in Lampang, south of Chiang Mai.  And in India, you can stay in the Hugging Mother's ashram as long as you want.  It's a big modern complex in Kerala.
