Many have chosen to retire in the Phils. because one , the cost of living is low two, it's a pleasant country to live in three, people are very friendly four, one can easily do business and the list can go on. 

Foreign nationals 35 yrs and above may opt to apply for a SRRV . Philippine government has many benefits outlined for a person wanting to retire in the country.

Doesn't look like you can every really own the land though, so you will be at the mercy of their country. I imagine it is very relaxing down there though.

Stability

Sounds great but what about stability. Wasn't there some unrest?

I would love to retire early at an affordable place, but I don't want to be surprised by some kind of reforms that suddenly make it impossible for me to stay.

Well, I believe the unrest is only around Mindanao, the southernmost part of the archipelago. So if you stay around Manila you'll be fine. Speaking of laws regarding land ownership, I haven't really checked into that yet. I'll probably try and look for some info and post if I can find some.

yet, i'm 25y old and therefore not old enough to retire. but good idea, i'll start saving some money for my days in the Philippines

Didn't you actually mean to say that you cannot afford to retire? I am older but I still cannot retire, but I think I would have retired at 25 if I had the funds :-)

Same here. A win in the lottery would surely have me retire early.
