Bangkok '09: Where to stay, what to do

I've booked my flight to Bangkok for May 13, 2009. I'll be there for three days.

I
need some advice on where best to stay (a hostel with clean sheets and
bathrooms) that is not too close to the busy and noisy Kao San Road,
but close enough that I can walk around there when I need to shop or
have a beer at night. OR is there anywhere else in BKK that I can stay
that offers what Kao San Road has?

I'm going to Bangkok mainly
to experience a bit of Thailand. I love culture and history, so old
buildings/temples will be on my agenda of places to visit.

I may
not be travelling alone, but if I do, any tips for solo travellers? I
don't have qualms about traveling alone, as I went to Bali in July by
myself, but in this case, I don't speak a lick of Thai!

Your help will be highly appreciated!
