Couples Relaxation trip to Tunisia
I don’t know about the rest but when I travel I like to pick destinations that aren’t too popular with tourists, although some tourists are essential otherwise services may be very limited.
The other half and I decided to take a trip to Tunisia last summer, being advised of its beauty by my sister. We had a look at the map of Tunisia decided we want to visit the north of the country. From friends and family we heard that Sousse was bursting with tourists and that the resort it self was very windy and dirty, so we crossed that out of our list. Monastir was another option but again it seems us Brits love going there, so again full of tourists. Hammamet was a nice resort, we did a little research and decided we wanted to go there or a small resort next to it. So eventually we went to Port-el-Kantauwi, which is in between Sousse and Hammamet.
It took us a couple of weeks to find a decent travel agent that could provide us a holiday to Port-el-Kantauwi on our given dates, eventually we got a deal at Thomas Cook. 7 nights 4 star hotel for 2 of us for less than £1000, I was happy with that.
Holiday sorted now we had to sort out the travel insurance, because Tunisia is in Africa a lot of the insurance firms wanted to charge a lot. However www.travelinsuranceweb.com class Tunisia in Europe so we got a couple cover for £16.00, another deal I was happy with.
So the day had come and we set off for our annual holiday from Stanstead, and as expected the flight got delayed by 4 hours. Never mind we thought, we just lounged around in the departure hall. We got to Tunisia at 4am local time, at the hotel at 5am. The hotel was called El Mouradi and what a delightful reception we got even at 5am! We were joined by only another British couple a lovely older couple on their 25th wedding Anniversary; it was only our first one!
The room was nice and big with a balcony, air con, satellite TV and a fully equipped bathroom. The hotel it self at 2 outdoor pools, 1 indoor pool, 2 restaurants indoors, 1 outdoor restaurant and a very large bar. It was on its own section of the beach, right alongside its lovely gardens.
On the 1st day we toured the hotel, dipped in the pool, walked on the beach and experimented with the food on offering. The food, yummy, usually both of us are very picky with what we eat but over there everything tasted delicious. On the 2nd day we went out of the hotel in the busking sun and explored the beautiful town, we chose to walk and see as much as possible, plus the cabbies and the road didn’t get my seal of approval.
We went to the local medina which is a traditional market full of handcrafted ornaments and bright clothes. So the wife was in heaven wanting to buy everything for everyone but mainly my little niece and nephew.
Part 2 to follow…………..

Thanks for the info. I am pretty much the same in that I hate to go where everyone else goes. Due to the job, I have to go when everyone else goes, but that doesn't mean I have to meet up with tons of tourists crowding my vacation spot. Its kinda hard these days to find something with a bit of solitude.
I am somewhat against buying travel insurance but then again thats a matter of personal opinion.
Seems like you had a really cool trip. Can't wait to read more. Do you have digital photos you could share?

Thanks Andre
I haven't had the chance to write up the rest of my trip, bogged down with work!!!!! I have got some pretty amazing pictures of Tunisia and i will get them up here ASAP!
I would like to know why your against travel insurance? surely its just a piece of mind knowing that your covered? Would like to know.
Cheers
Sounds like a great trip. We to like to go to places that arnt to over crowded with tourist. Same as camping instead of staying in parks we like to stay out in the wilderness as long as camping is allowed that is. We normally always take out insurance while travelling I feel more at peace with it but I suppose every body has their own opinion on it. It is getting quite expensive over here though which is a shame.

Well, thats true and a perfectly valid reason for insurance. I have also bought insurance before, especially when I booked a trip far in advance. If I book something for the short term, I usually don't do it. I like to keep things simple. When my plane was grounded in Peru, I have incurred maybe $100 in cost that the insurance would have covered, but I was too lazy to file a claim.
I certainly appreciate the tip and if its not for me, others will sure find it useful.
Let me know if you have trouble getting the pictures up. There are basically two ways. The little blue camera icon will upload the pictures to the server and the little tree icon can be used if you want to link the pictures from photobucket or a similar service.
Hm. Knowing that you are Australian, i am surprised. I wouldn't camp in a country known to have the most poisonous snakes in the world. I am actually always looking for a hotel. However I was contemplating staying overnight on the channel islands, and the only way I know you can do it is by tent.

We went to Port El K' in 2000 for our Honeymoon. We chose it for similar reasons. After planning the wedding we wanted somewhere relaxing and slightly off the beaten track. The quality of the hotels that you get for the money in Tunisia are unbeleivable. We couldnt beleive what we were staying at for the money.
