Get to Know Denver, then Pass along to Aspen, Colorado

Denver SkylineDenver SkylineIf you're an east-coaster like me, Colorado is an irresistible vacation destination. For years I'd wanted to "travel out West" - to see the towering mountains, breathe the fresh air, and find out what's it's like to be in what always seemed the middle of nowhere. A business trip to Denver finally gave me the opportunity to enjoy my dream getaway. Of course, it was a much more incredible experience than I'd ever imagined it would be, and thankfully, far less remote!

Business kept me busy in Denver my first day, but I planned ahead to have some time to explore the city and head out to two must-see destinations - the Rockies, and Aspen. I thought about heading straight for the mountains on my first free day, but I'm glad I decided to spend an extra day getting to know Denver.

I had no idea what Denver would have to offer in terms of attractions and entertainment, and I was surprised to find there was much more to do and see than I could possibly accomplish in one day. You can easily walk around and tour many of Denver's top attractions, including the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado History Museum, and the beautiful, gold-domed Colorado State Capitol building. But if you want to take your time and really explore any one of these attractions, pick one or two and plan to spend a few hours.

Downtown Denver's Attractions

Colorado State CapitolColorado State CapitolI spent about two and half hours touring the State Capitol building. First I took a 45-minute building tour. This tour included visits to the stunning House of Representatives Gallery and Senate Chambers with its stained glass portraits, information about the building itself, a tour of the Gallery of the Presidents and more. Highlights of the exterior grounds include Civil War Canons, a Civil War Memorial, and the Veterans Monument and Flagpole. On my next trip to Denver, I'll definitely be reserving a Dome Tour in advance, as these have to be booked ahead of time.

In addition to all the downtown historical and cultural attractions you can visit on a trip to Denver, there's tons of ways to spend time outdoors. I knew I would be heading to the mountains the next day, but I still took the time to enjoy a stroll along the Pedestrian Promenade at beautiful Confluence Park. You could easily rent a bike or kayak to take out on the South Platte River right near the Park.

Whatever you decide to do in Denver, you'll probably find it's easiest if you book a hotel right downtown. I found the Hotel VQ at 1975 Mile High Stadium Circle very affordable, convenient and comfortable. It was within walking distance of downtown, but they also offered a great free shuttle I took advantage of to reach the Capitol. There's also a Sports Bar and restaurant on site. If you want to book a stay here, you'll get the best rates through HotelsCombined.com online.

Independence Pass to Aspen

Aspen, ColoradoAspen, Colorado I rented a car in Denver and headed to Aspen via Independence Pass after only one day in the city, and although I wished I could have spent more time in Denver, I was excited to get on the road. I headed for Aspen via Independence Pass at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, and with several stops along the way, arrived in Aspen at almost 2 p.m. I'm certain I could have made it there quicker, but I had never experienced "mountain" driving before.

Driving along Independence Pass was an unforgettable experience, but one I wouldn't recommend if you are nervous about driving - or heights! The views from the top of the mountains are stunning, and I stopped to take a quick tour of Independence Ghost Town, an old mining town that offers a great opportunity to take a break from driving.

Hiking in Aspen

Everyone thinks of skiing when Aspen is mentioned, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy spending time here off-season, as well. I visited in the fall and experienced some of the best hiking I've ever enjoyed anywhere. There are dozens of options for hiking in and around Aspen, from easy Boardwalk and "kid friendly" hikes to natural trails and steep climbs. Any trail you choose will reward you with spectacular views - especially during the autumn months.

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent exploring the mountains along the way from Denver, plus from my base in Aspen where I spent two days. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Denver and Colorado, and it will definitely include spending several days visiting Rocky Mountain National Park for more hiking and wildlife viewing.
