Honestly, when you think of New York, do you think of New York the State or New York the City? Right and you are not alone. For most, New York is the Big Apple, the city where everything is taller, bigger, brighter, and better. But the biggest city in the US is only part of what makes New York State so unique and charming.

Albany
New York State CapitolNew York State CapitolThe state's capital since 1797, Albany is a city of many different shades. Old and new combine perfectly and make it a popular tourist destination.

One of the city's highlights is no doubt Empire State Plaza with the State Capitol. The Capitol's design is an interesting mix of a number of different architectural styles, including French and Italian Renaissance.

Other architectural highlights are Corning Tower, offering a great view over the city on its observation deck, and The Egg, Albany's location for the performing arts.

Also very popular is the New York State Museum which offers a glimpse in the state's history. Another attraction are the city's numerous festivals throughout the year, including the Tulip Festival at the beginning of Spring.

Hudson River Valley
If you are interested in historical building, the Hudson River Valley is just what you have been looking for. Aside from its striking natural beauty, you can find Washington Irvine's home Sunnyside, the Vanderbilt Mansion, as well as Fort Putnam, which is now part of the United States Military Academy.

Another highlight is the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, which is now a National Historic Site. It is not only the house where FDR was born, but it also used as the summer White House during his term.

Niagara Falls
If you are visiting New York State, you should notNiagara FallsNiagara Falls miss a visit to the Niagara Falls. Start in the Niagara Falls State Park and go up on Prospect Point Observation Tower to get an overview. You can also take boat and other tours to get closer to the falls.

If you are interested, you can also cross over to the Canadian Side on Rainbow Bridge to see the Canadian Falls and get a different view.

Finally, plan to stay until it gets dark when the falls are illuminated, which is a different experience yet again.

Other Attractions in New York State
There is much, much more to see and do in this great state. From the Hamptons and Long Island, to Adirondack Park and Finger Lakes, to Syracuse and Cooperstown with the National Baseball Hall of Fame, there is surely something for everyone.
