Outside the City

Silicon Valley, the famous high tech center of the computer revolution, lies south of San Francisco. San Jose, the unofficial capital of the Silicon Valley marks the southern end of the bay. The Egyptian Museum, the Tech Museum, and the Winchester Mystery house are amongst its most revered sights.

Just a couple of hours north of the cities lies Muir Woods, a state park of giant Redwoods. During peak travel season, the parking lots are full and tourists overrun the park. If you are traveling during the off-season (September to April), the park is well worth a visit, otherwise spare yourself the long drive.

San Francisco to Santa CruzTake a drive down towards Santa Cruz via Highway 1. The road winds along the spectacular cliffs of the California Coast. Head for Pacifica and from there towards Half Moon Bay. In Half Moon Bay you could either take Highway 92 to Skyline Boulevard (CA-35) or stay on Highway 1. There are plenty of opportunities to spend a great day on the beach, sample some of the local strawberries or to go for a hike in Ano Nuevo State Preserve. Whichever route you choose, you are guaranteed spectacular sights and a relaxing escape from the hectic city life.

Yosemite National Park is located about 3.5 hours from the city. If you want to see pristine nature, head out for Yosemite, California’s most popular National Park.
