Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge with SkylineGolden Gate Bridge with SkylineSan Francisco’s most recognized landmark is the Golden Gate Bridge. It is the nation’s most photographed structure and a beautiful romantic backdrop imaginable. Its name comes from the strait it crosses which was the entrance for most gold diggers and fortune hunters during the time of the big gold rush.

The Golden Gate Bridge is visible from many vantage points all around the city. I have marked some of my favorite places to photograph the bridge on the left map.

You can drive, walk, or bike over the bridge. Soon the toll for cars will increase to $7 for crossing the bridge into the city. There is a parking lot north of the bridge (near the right marker on the map).

To get a fantastic view of the entire bay with the bridge framing the San Francisco skyline you need to drive up Conzelman Road (the other two markers to the north). After the parking lot, take the Sausalito exit and then turn left underneath 101 back towards the city. Take the next exit to the right, leading up a steep hill and do not merge back into 101.

No visit to San Francisco is complete without crossing the bridge at least once. Late afternoon views from Conzelman Road are exceptional. In summer, fog often engulfs the city and the bridge obstructing a clear view. If you are lucky, the fog will add to the mood of the scene and create a typical San Francisco weather pattern. If you are unlucky, fog will cover everything. I therefore recommend coming up here once in the morning and once in the evening for the best views.
